9:43 PM Iceland Time
Today has been a great day! I went to work in the morning at
the art museum also known as the Gerðarsafn Kópavogur Art Museum. I met with Hrafnhildur,
who is going to be coordinating my volunteering. She is really nice and was
excited to have my help and artistic insight into their programs. We get along
great together, and we have a lot in common!
I will be helping them with documenting their community
family events that they have weekly and will be coordinating with Endur Hugsa;
the youth group I met with on Monday. The museum hosts “culture Wednesdays” and
on Saturdays they have family events where they offer creative collaboration
for the whole family. This includes art shows, lectures, concerts and activities
for both children and adolescents. I will be documenting the events by taking
photos and helping them out with their social media. Endur Hugsa also may have
me come up with some art activities! This placement is so perfect for me, I
really am so blessed!
Today they had a culture Wednesday event where they offered
guests a guided tour of the exhibition, followed by a concert played by some local
youth. They played some classical violin duets and solos, and my god where they
talented! I think they played Bach. I was overwhelmed by how beautifully they played,
and the art museum provided a great ambiance and acoustics. I walked around the
event and took photos for them. I couldn’t keep my smile off my face, this
volunteer placement doesn’t feel like work at all!
After everyone left, Hrafnhildur and I uploaded the pictures
I took, and talked about the Snorri program. We got talking about genealogy and
íslenskabok, and she mentioned she hadn’t ever really looked on there. We had a
bit of fun looking at how we were related, (we are 10th cousins) and
she even checked to see how her, and her boyfriend were related! Turns out they
were pretty distant cousins, but it freaked her out a little bit! Haha After
our fun, she invited me to have lunch with her, so we went to a place down the
road that had really good falafels. It has been great to get to know her!
After lunch, I helped organize their children’s art area to
make it more functional and practical. I will be organizing some more areas
tomorrow. Hrafnhildur was done with her work for the day, so we both took the
bus back into town. Before heading home, I of course stopped at sundhöll
reykjavíkur (my favorite pool so far).
When I got home, Skarpi and I watched some futbol matches
together, and he made some fish again. He sure knows how to cook fish! I just
wish he would let me help a bit more, but he says and seems like he enjoys
being able to cook for someone else. After dinner, we went to the cinema and
watched an Icelandic film that was based on one of his favorite books. It was
called, “Svanurinn” or “The Swan”. It
was a pretty good film and had some gorgeous Icelandic landscapes in it. Skarpi
really seemed happy to go with me. We got there a bit early and got some
snacks; he got chocolate and I got licorice. It was funny, he said, “that isn’t
healthy you know, but this chocolate bar is! I am going to have another one.” He
really is a sweet fun man, and I am so happy and blessed to have this opportunity
to meet family him!
Anyways, I have to
get to bed; I have work (more like fun and not work) tomorrow. Stay tuned for
more adventures!
