Day 14

June 23, 2018

11:15 PM Iceland Time

This morning I had breakfast with Skarpi (lactose free skyr, muesli and coffee has been my go to lately) and tried to figure out what we were going to do for the day. He was a bit worried about the weather, but even though it was overcast we decided to go on a hike. He took me to a place he used to walk all the time about 30 minutes outside of Reykjavik called Heiðmörk.

Heiðmörk was beautiful! It was a little wooded trail area with pines and birch trees. Everything but the trail was covered in a thick blanket of moss and/or Icelandic lupine. It didn’t rain, and it wasn’t too cold. It did get a bit gusty towards the end.  It was nice to spend time with Skarpi, we enjoyed each other’s company and the beauty of Iceland’s nature.

When we got home, I headed out into town to get some cough medicine and shop for a wool sweater. It has been a bit of a pain; a lot of us Snorris got a nasty cold. I am hoping it will go away soon. I usually don’t get sick, but I think since I haven’t really allotted myself time to just rest it off, I think it has prolonged it. There is just so much to see and do, I want to make the best of my time here.

I got a great Icelandic wool sweater for a decent price; I didn’t realize how warm they are! I have
been wearing a few layers at a time; sometimes 3 layers (I am a wimp when it comes to cold) But with the wool sweater I only need two! When I got back from the shops, I went to get groceries with Skarpi, and then we came home and watched the soccer game of Germany and Sweden.

When the game was over, Skarpi made us dinner; I keep offering to help him out, but he always wants to do it himself! He is so sweet, he has been very worried that I won’t like his cooking, but it has been excellent! He always says he isn’t a master chef, but he sure is in my book! He made some fish (I think it was a type of cod?) and rice with a really good sauce. I am not sure what it was exactly, but it was amazing!

After dinner I decided to go to the thermal pools up the street. I really cannot express how much I LOVE the thermal pools here. It is so relaxing, and I feel like the heat has been helping with my cold. I usually go in the hot pool, then the cold pool, then the steam room, back in the cold pool, then the hot pool, cold pool, etc. etc. I used to only be able to dip my feet in the cold pool, but now I can sit in it up to my neck for about 15 seconds. It is about 48-50 degrees Fahrenheit, which is cold enough to make you numb. I stayed until the pool closed, and then went to the same vegan crepe place I went to last night. They are so good!

Tomorrow I am going to meet up with a fellow Snorri to check out a museum, so stay tuned for tomorrow’s adventures!
